Hey, that's Good!

This morning I was talking to one of our neighbours about what it is like to come across a particularly clever bit of writing, or hear an especially pleasant piece of music, only to realise it's your own writing or you playing that music. We'd both had that experience.
She asked me if I'd ever had that feeling about my photography and I said yes - but then I could not come up with any examples.
Later today, going through my collection it happened: 'Wow, good work!'

Here they are, three photos I took in March 2006. They could have been someone else's work, but they are mine and that makes me a happy man.

My question to you who are reading this now, have you any examples of such work? I would like to hear about it. Hmmm, is this the beginning of a series of taggings? Handy way for me to avoid them: I tend to panick when I get tagged.

I especially love the top one- the contrast of the snow and the metal is just stunning.

And yes, I have been proud of my work, but it's hard to post entire novels in one sitting. :)

To which I quickly add to Val, I'm working on 'smore!

Koos, these are tuly great photographs. The composition, textures and contrast are so striking, and the images have that special something else that demands attention and takes them beyond mere pics. You have a wonderful eye. Two, even.

As for your question, yes, occasionally I write something and re-read it with real pleasure. It doesn't have to be an epic, just a pice of writing which says what I wanted it to say and does it with a certain style or effectiveness. Sometimes the right words just find their way there and sit happily in a way that satisfies me.

However, as Eric Morecambe said to Andre Previn, it's not just about getting the right notes; putting them in the right order is just as important. The same true is words for. Oh. Bother. Not one of my better days then.

Hmmm. Pice. Nice word. Perhaps I should have mentioned that my superb editing skills also give me pleasure.

Oh, and there was "tuly" as well! I rest my case, and will now go and rest my head.

One day you might just re-read your own comments here and realise: "That was good!"
Oh and I love words with a serendiptious origin.

Big thanks for Anne-Marie's comment too!

I have the same feeling sometimes. I've kept every poem I've ever written and its always fun to go back and read things I wrote years ago and think "Wow, thats actually pretty good!"

One very memorable occasion was when my sister sent me a photo of her new house and I spotted a painting she had hung on the wall. "Thats a very pleasing piece of work" I told her, "who's the artist?" to which she replied with a grin "You are!"

I'd completely forgotten ever having painted the piece in question but was very pleased and quite touched that she also thought it was good enough to display on her wall... especially seeing as she is a far more talented artist than I could ever hope to be!

Hi Jo

That is such a good example! Sometimes I tend to forget that behind the boasting that we both are good at ("it's hard to remain modest if one's as good as I am") now and then we really have good reasons to be happy with our achievements.

And I agree that was a really good piece of art you'd produced there.

Hi Koos,
You just put it right there. If it gives you the right satisfaction means in my opinion that you did the right thing. Could not be better and of no importance what anyone else thinks of it. This is what photography is about for the makers/creators. No matter if it is a job or for fun only. The results and the satifaction are the ingredients that count..
So: Good Work!
E.J.

Thank you, Erik-Jan.
I would guess that especially a professional photographer needs to establish such things for himself, so you are familiar with the subject.
Thanks for sharing your insight with us. It makes sense that way.

I always love photos, as you can see with my blog, I posted some new ocean photos, that's my schtick with my blog, some ocean and dogs for now. But I love photos, to me it says alot of what a person likes how they might feel.

You have inspired me! I have posted something other than my ocean and my dogs. Thanks for taking me out my box of regularity. All my photos are from what I have taken.

Hi Grace
Your post is a really big compliment.
I have tried to return this compliment by doing a post that's dedicated to you:

Good work, I see what you mean! I have to say I was 'struck' by each one differently...but I do like the last the best - although the composition in the second is intriguing. I am a fan of lamps such as the one depicted in the last. I have a few pieces that I feel that way about...

Ah yes, I like this post. Not just because of the photo's, which are of the great quality I've come to expect of you Koos, but also because we all get to polish up our ego without some *beep* coming in telling us we're arrogant.

I've have this 'damn I'm good feeling' with some of the lyrics I wrote for the band and with the start I made on a book a few years ago. Downside of the last example is that I never finished. Oh well at least I can never truly say I've got nothing to do :-)
